Dr. Holly Snow
My house has two Dr. Snows living in it. Are you surprised? Don’t worry, most people don’t know this. I’ve kept it a secret for many years. I figured now was the perfect time to be transparent. Here is the truth—I sometimes refer to myself as Dr. Snow because years of listening to medical stories and remedies has made me an expert. I’ve been given an honorable medical degree. 😜
Just kidding.
However, listening to all the “stuff” about orthopedics has taught me a couple of tips that I can offer confidently:
ice
rest
elevate
repeat
After I have given such sound advice, I later confirm with Brian about my recommendations. Boom, baby! I’m batting 1000.
Seriously.
I LOVE to tease Brian about my “medical degree”. I’m not sure he loves my teasing, or my self-imposed status of doctor. A little irritated at my teasing the other night, he reminded me that while lots of people could advise ice and rest, his surgical abilities were a skill-set I was lacking.
He was right. 😂
After years of training and experience, Brian’s understanding of how the human body’s bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments work together is vast. He knows how to put broken things back together, when surgery is required, and when waiting is a better option. On the other hand, my understanding is limited…VERY limited. I know that ice helps with pain, swelling, and inflammation. That’s pretty much the extent of it. HA!
We live in the Information Age. There is so much available to read, listen to, and consume on a daily basis. Google makes our path to “expert” quite short. Sometimes it is tempting and simply too easy to take a little bit of one thing and apply it broadly, to all situations. But is your understanding deep? Or shallow? Are you thinking critically?
Like I often tell my kids—not everything you read/see on the internet is true.
Our ability to think is what sets humans apart from all other creatures on the earth. Use it! No one is an expert in everything, even if you’ve watched A LOT of youtube videos. Utilize the people that have a deep understanding—go to them directly with your questions and for advice, whether it is medical or not. I rely on plumbers for my pipes, dentists for my teeth and gums, and veterinarians to take care of my animals. I’m a big fan of direct.
In all your consumption of information, a quick mental pause to think before you hit share is good practice.
And if you are needing a little more orthopedic help than icing, elevating, and resting…talking to the actual Dr. Snow is probably a great idea.
Dr. Snow is in! 😂
