Oops! I did it again.
I did it again.
I checked out another book about home organization. This time it was Martha Stewart—the QUEEN of all things in the home! Once again, I just knew I was going to read some amazing paragraph, some unique and mind-blowing tip that would change me into an organized, label-wielding, container-buying maven.
Shockingly, I have not read anything life altering. It is great and informative, but really, the same stuff.
What was I thinking?
I’ll be honest. I am constantly searching for a little magic. Like the dieter hunting for a quick fix to lose weight, I am always on the lookout for that easy button. Help me! Teach me! Sell me the secrets!
Truthfully, I do get into moods—times when I am really into cleaning and organizing and I go all in. This is usually when I start “editing” agressively, and my family knows that every item we own is on the potential chopping block. It’s an unpredictable time in the Snow household. I donate and trash and donate some more. And then…my mood shifts and all of a sudden there are piles of stuff all over my house and a to-do list that never quits.
At this point, I either buy or borrow another book on organization, and off to the races I go. Again. THIS is going to change my life. The cycle lives on!
Is there hope? Can someone like me live in the world of labels and everything-in-its-place and nothing-gets-lost? Books, systems, subscription plans, coaches, whatever you need is available at anytime. Who is the best? Do I need Joanna or Marie or Martha? Baskets or plastic containers? What system is going to be the magic?
Well, after years of spinning on this particular hamster wheel, I’ve learned something.
The solution is not another organizational book (sorry, Martha!). It’s not a brand of containers, or boxes, or even the Elfa system from The Container Store (I admit sheepishly that I have tried all these things🙄). There is no secret. Seriously. There is no secret, no magic, no one-step solution.
The key to organization (or anything else you want to do) is to just start somewhere, and then keep going.
Every.
Single.
Day.
Start and do the work.
Start and do the work.
And I will…as soon as I finish this book 😜
