Lunch with a Loved One
About a week ago, Annie woke up for school and came downstairs limping. She said her foot was hurting and she couldn't put any weight on it. It happened to be a Tuesday. I know this, because her foot got run over by one of those battery powered toy cars on Sunday...and she wasn't limping that night or the following Monday. All the same, she was limping and favoring her foot. I put a bandaid over the wound and sent her to school.A few hours later, I got a message from her school nurse. Annie was STILL limping, not herself, and wouldn't play at recess. It was definitely out of the ordinary, and I was troubled. Could it be broken? The nurse was wondering the same thing.I decided that she needed an X-ray, just to be sure. I threw on some clothes, brushed through my hair and got Tucker in the car. We looked disheveled at best, but I was just running to Brian's office and back, so I didn't think twice about it.Ten minutes later I pulled up to the school...there were SO MANY CARS! Cars filled every parking spot and spilled out onto the street in both directions. What was going on?I couldn't remember. We walked inside to get Annie, and then it hit me. LUNCH WITH A LOVED ONE! It was today.Have you ever heard of this? Lunch with a loved one happens during the school book fair, and I'm almost positive it was invented to filter out the awesome moms from the lame ones. In case you are wondering, I fit into the latter category. Now some moms delegate the loved one assignment out to grandparents, older siblings, aunts or uncles...but we don't live by any family, so there is no delegating. It is my responsibility.I had completely forgotten.I picked up Annie, and she slowly limped to the car. As we drove away, she quietly asked if I had remembered the loved one lunch?"Of course I did," I lied. Then I explained how she would need to eat in the car on our way to get her X-ray. She smiled and started eating. The X-ray was negative. No broken bones in her foot. Brian's office staff fussed and fawned over her injury a good amount, and Annie thoroughly enjoyed the attention. We headed back to school.I arrived just in time for Norah's lunch. I glanced at myself in the mirror. Ugh. I had not showered, had no makeup on, and had used dry shampoo for WAY too many days. It was not a good look. I wavered for a moment. Maybe Norah wouldn't care if I missed lunch?I knew she would. Tucker and I got out of the car and entered the school with the awesome moms who were showered and clean and beautiful. I tried not to look at anyone. We marched in the lunchroom, and Norah saw us immediately. We ate lunch together. More accurately, Tucker and I watched Norah eat lunch. But we did do it together. I couldn't believe my luck! What were the chances that I would drive to school on THAT day and at THAT time?I'll tell you what I think. Jesus was watching out for me that day. He knows I'm a lame mom who forgets things all the time, and He just wanted to help me out. Holly, you can be an awesome mom today! And while I would have appreciated the help when I'm looking amazing, I'll take it anytime.
