Driving through tornadoes
I was driving my mom to the airport in Texas. The weather forecast was for thunderstorms and possible tornados.
The sky was cloudy with a few raindrops here and there, but that was it. As we got closer to the airport, the real rain started.
Lightning danced behind the clouds like sheets. The constant waves of lightning lit the sky on both sides of the freeway. We watched as massive lightning bolts crashed down from the clouds in front of us.
Suddenly, the sky got dark. Although it was 9 o’clock in the morning, the light was gone. The wind picked up and was whipping around us. Thunder clapped seconds after each lightning strike. The rain poured. I couldn’t hear anything my mom said, even though she was right next to me.
I was terrified. Everything inside me was screaming to STOP! Stop the car! Hide!
I wondered if this was how I was going to die. But far ahead, in the distance, I could see some light.
We kept going.
Amazingly, even though it was frightening, we made to the lighter skies and the airport. My mom made it on time and was able to board her flight back to Idaho.
I’ve written several times about this, but it is so important. We have to go through the hard, scary, sometimes horrible stuff. Believe me, I wanted to pull over and just bury my head in my hands. I was scared. But doing that would have kept me in the storm LONGER.
Did I actually drive through a tornado? Maybe not, but it was close enough for me.
Life is like that storm. Hard things happen to us all. You want to stop. You want to hide and cover your eyes.
Don’t do it. Keep driving through it.
Lighter skies are ahead.
