Can we agree?

Lately, my social media feeds are just one big argument. Everyone is stating their opinions about everything, followed up by shared articles written by some obscure author who validates and justifies his/her opinion. And the bickering commentary on each post is making my head spin.

Diversity. Oh, boy, we have achieved diversity. HOORAY!! WE DID IT! But—diversity without an underlying, unifying belief is war. It feels like we are at war. And I’m tired of it.

So in a spirit of love and unity, I’d like to suggest something we can all get behind. Take a breath, open your mind a bit, and get ready. Here we go:

No one has a high pain tolerance.

I’m going to say that again.

No one has a high pain tolerance.

Seriously. That means you. It includes me. It is a truth that applies to all ages, sexes, races, and any other kind of divisions that we have created. Human beings are designed to avoid pain. As a general rule, pain causes us to yelp, cry, scream, holler, curse, or groan. It can stop us in our tracks, or cause us to crumple to the earth.

As a doctor, Brian has often heard patients introduce their stories with a personal high pain tolerance introduction. However, on closer examination, the very appearance of that patient in his office seems to point to the conclusion that none of us have a high pain tolerance.

Ok, wait. There is a genetic disorder where people have congenital insensitivity to pain. But that is incredibly rare—like only a few hundred cases reported worldwide.

It’s not you.

Let’s find some common ground here. Let’s join hands and be unified, knowing that none of us have a high pain tolerance.

THE END.
